My first clue should have been the melted ice cream at Caleb's birthday party!!!! Caleb's party was last Saturday. The following Wednesday I came home to the most nasty smell I have EVER smelled! I started looking for a dirty diaper. Everyone was clean and there were no diapers that claimed that smell. Christian and I looked and smelled everywhere for the source of the "dead animal" like smell. Christian went into the garage and BAM! The smell hit him in the face. After more investigation we found the source of our smell. It was coming from our garage freezer. Come to find out.... our ice cream was not melted because the door was not all the way shut..... it was melted because the breaker switch for the freezer flipped off. So for 5 days it went unnoticed. We had a freezer FULL of food. There were 6 packages of chicken, ground beef, frozen dinners, frozen pizzas, frozen veggies, waffles and some ice cream. It was SO nasty! All that meat was rotten and was the source of our problem. After finding it... I knew what had to be done. All that food needed to be pulled out and thrown away. That freezer needed to be bleached clean and the house needed to be aired out. I got a pair of rubber gloves, held my breath and did the job. Remember this was on a Wednesday. Our garbage pick up is on Mondays. So for 5 more days those bags of trash sat in our trashcan behind our fence waiting to be thrown away. Imagine bags of rotten meat sitting now for over a week in the blazing Florida sun. It was a fly heaven. It was NASTY. On Monday morning Christian and I laid in the bed and heard the garbage man come. We knew that he was probably had a few choice words for us. We were just happy to get all those bags out of here! ( They could have taken that can too!) Anyway...Christian put a huge fan in the garage to try to get the smell out. Nothing seemed to work. I bleached the freezer. I used a box of Baking Soda and we still had the smell. I started to get desperate. I called my mom and retold her the story and she mentioned she read a simple trick to getting smells out of the fridge. She told me to put instant coffee crystals on a paper towel in the freezer. So I did it while talking to her on the phone. I had my doubts but was happy to try it. I am so happy to report that almost an hour later that smell was gone. Who knew? It has been eventful around here. If I could have only clued in when our ice cream was melted!
There are no pictures to go with this post. I wish I could post the smell for you all. Trust me it was BAD!
